Portiere Rods and Door Curtains

People lived with cold weather long before central heating, how did they survive ?

Well, for some it was as simple as portiere rods and interlined door curtains.

A portiere rod is a pole that fits to the door. On the hinge side of the door you install the hinge end of the portiere. The other portiere bracket fits to the door itself. As the door opens the portiere rod swings with it.

A rising portiere is a very clever piece of engineering, the hinged door bracket causes the portiere to rise as it swings and lift the curtain out of the way. This means you can make your curtain a little more generous to sit on the floor for better draughtproofing

An interlined door curtain is a single width of fabric, lined and interlined, preferably with heavy bump, it's a bit like hanging a duvet at the door. The three layers of fabric trap air, the loose weave of the interlining traps air, the curtain traps a layer of air between itself and the door, and it is these layers of air that give insulation, in addition there is the physical barrier of a heavy curtain helping to prevent draughts.

Portiere rods and door curtains are relatively easy to install yourself, and we usually have some stock of both.

Above is a polished brass rising portiere fitted to a front door in North London. A single width curtain with heavy bump interlining traps layers of air to help with insulation and helps keep draughts at bay. When you go out and close the door behind you, the curtain closes too and helps to keep the heat in.

This system with a rising
portiere rod allows the door
to open to virtually its
maximum

In our shop we only have one door,
but we need to display two portieres,
one is fitted too low

We had to put the rising portiere at the
top, it is available in brass or
various chrome finishes

The portiere below should be fitted so that
the curtain covers the gap at the top of
the door. Available in black, graphite,
bronze or pewter

Above and below are photos of our shop door display of portiere rods. If you look closely you can see how the rising portiere at the top rises as the door opens. In the portiere fitted below, the pole slides through the bracket attached to the door, you can see it sticks out further from the bracket when the door is open. We usually have brass rising portieres in stock. We usually have graphite and bronze portieres in stock.
