How to achieve Good Blackout

"Blackout" fabric does not allow light through the fabric, but, lightwash will come round the edges
( gaps = light, if you can lose the gaps it will get darker )
Roller blind fabric is usually 30-35mm narrower than the bracket to bracket measurement, and there is a gap at the top where the roller stands away from the frame
Duette fabric is pretty much the same width as the headrail, and the headrail fits tighter to the frame
( less gaps = less light )
If we can then attach a side channel to wrap around the fabric, there is less light again

Changing Curtains offer a measure and installation service for good blackout blinds in North London and Central London and in East London / Docklands

The photos below are not very good, but hopefully illustrate the point. I didn't plan this photo session very well, I just snapped a couple of photos on my phone whilst fitting a blind for a client to improve the level of "blackout".

There is a "blackout" roller blind already installed, but there is still a lot of light in the room, not too bad at the top, not very good at the sides - this photo was taken without flash

I have replaced the "blackout" roller blind with a "blackout" duette blind, its good at the top and better at the sides, but there is still lightwash - this photo was taken without flash

I have now attached a side channel to the wall on either side of the blind to reduce the lightwash - but to take this photograph I do need the flash

Without the flash its a bit tricky to see anything other than the lack of light - there is a little light from the doorway
